Todays Steelhead Report October 18, 2009
October 18th - Cattaraugus Creek is running at 567 CFS and it looks like it has peaked from the light all day drizzle on friday, water is off color fishing is tough. All other Erie feeder creeks that were running a little low should rise as snow in the higher elevations and drainage areas melts. The smaller creeks in the Erie area came yesterday and are now going down. Fishing today and monday should be good. Water will continue to drop on the erie tribs ove the next few days and should be a bit low by tuesday.
Yesterday Oct 16th was a change over day and I got to fish the Catt for about 5 hours. My friend and I landed a total of 5 fish and hooked another 4. Water conditions are OK
Oct 15th. Our first group, the (Leonard) party hooked 112 fish in two days and landed about 40. We were up at 4 AM fishing hard from 7 AM to 4 PM. Lots of tired happy Steelheaders. Lots of nice Steelhead being caught ranging between 7 and 11 pounds. There is a light drizzle here and should not change the water on the Catt to any great degree. Rain is needed on PA/ Erie tribs. I will keep you posted. We still have a few slots open at Steelhead Camp. See info below. Tight lines,
COZ
Dear friends,
As another spring and summer fishing season comes to a close on the Delaware I hope this finds you all well and in good spirits.
As of October 5th, as we have done for the past 7 years Border Water Outfitters will close the shop for the season, pack up and head to "Steelhead Camp" at our facility on the shores of Lake Erie in western NY. Our friends and clients will join us from Oct 5th through November 15th as we guide them to the most prolific Steelhead waters in the East, Steelhead Alley. Our Lake Erie beach front lodge is 3 minutes to the mouth of the famous Cattaraugus River and 20 minutes to over 10 Lake Erie tributaries filled with fresh fall run steelehad and browns ranging from 6 to 14 pounds. What Lake Erie tributaries do not have are crowds and the shoulder to shoulder salmon guys. No salmon in these tribs, just fresh chrome steelies and browns. We have very limited space left to accomadate new friends and clients waiting to experience this exciting, reel screaming and heart pounding experience.
We hope you can join us on what has become our most popular fall fishing destination. For more info or to book your trip e mail us at

RIVER INFO YOU SHOULD KNOW!!
The WEST BRANCH DELAWARE RIVER begins at Cannonsville reservoir a flows south some 17 miles to the town of Hancock, New York before joining the East Branch and forming the Main Branch or “BIG D”. The West Branch has the widest variety of structure, greatest number of islands and public access areas of all the three branches. The released water from Cannonsville reservoir creates this wonderful tail water and keeps the West Branch cooled most of the season making the West Branch a favorite among many anglers.
Season: April 1st to September 30 th Cannonsville reservoir down to NY/PA border. Open year round catch & release only PA border down stream.
WEST BRANCH water levels relative to wading and navigation :

The MAIN BRANCH DELAWARE RIVER begins in Hancock, NY at the junction of the East and West branches known as "Junction Pool" or by local folks as "The Point". The Upper Main starts at "The Point" and continues about 12 miles to Lordville bridge. During summer months it is rare to have good cold water temperatures past Lordville. Most of the good summer fishing conditions are upstream of Buckingham boat launch. This portion of the Main has large islands, back channels, tree lined banks, wide deep pools, long riffles and lots of wader friendly water. Access is limited by foot. Using a water craft is the best way to access all the water. The Lower Main starts at Lordville and continues some 20 miles to Callicoon, NY. the lower main fishes good for trout during Spring and fall seasons. During summer months the water temps are more condusive to great smallmouth bass action.
Season: Regular season opens mid April and closes end of September. Open year round for trout (Catch and release only)
Species: Brown, rainbow & brook trout. Smallmouth bass, walleye, shad and some strippers. Rainbows average 14 inches, Browns about 17 but lots over 20 on dries.

THE EAST BRANCH of the Delaware river is broken into two sections, the Upper or Little East that begins at Pepacton Reservoir, Walton, Ny is the smallest of the branches and flows some 17 miles where it meets the Beaverkill (The Jaws) and forms the Big or Lower East Branch. From the Jaws the Big East widens and continues for 16 miles meeting the West Branch and forming Junction Pool at (The Point) in Hancock, NY. The Upper East stays cold for most of the season with summer cold water release cooling into the mid 50's. The Big East usually starts to warm in late June influenced greatly by the warm water of the Beaverkill. On wet years when reservoir is full temps could stay into the Mid 60's on the Big East due to larger cold water releases.
Season: April 1 to Oct 15th (Pepacton Dam to Hancock). Oct 15th to Nov. 30th Catch & Release only (Shinhopple Bridge downriver to Hancock).
Species: Browns, rainbows, brookies and smallmouth bass. Rainbows average 12", browns 16", lots of browns in the 20+ " class, some brookies, 10" average.

River Reports Aug, 14, 2009
"WEST BRANCH"
Release is 1501 CFS. This release under the FFMP plan will continue until further notice or until Cannonsville reservoir spills again then the release will go back up to 1500 CFS. There is 750 CFS coming into Cannonsville reservoir at Walton. If this continues the reservoir will spill again soon.
Stilesville is at 1590cfs and 54 degrees. Hale Eddy is at 2260cfs and 52 degrees. Rivers have been dropping very rapidly and have good visibility. There has been a some bug and fish activity on the surface and streamers have been working well with lots of fish holding to the banks. As the water drops we should see the surface action improve. Cooler temperatures from the bottom releases have been inducing some Sulpher hatches and the Olives are still coming off in decent numbers. Tricos have also started recently and have been seen in pretty good numbers with plenty of fish to the surface for some early morning dry fly action. Conditions are great for a float trip down the river, but waders will still be limited in some areas and should use caution.
"MAIN BRANCH"
Water at Callicoon is 6000cfs and rising, water temp is 64 degrees. Lordville is 5430cfs and 61 degrees. Sulphers, Cahills, Olives, Golden Drakes and Isos have produced decent surface action. Streamers have been a good option as well. White flies have also been coming off in some areas and it is also a good time of year for Flying Ants and Beatle patterns. Water levels have dropped quickly and the clearity is good....nice overcast day today should have the Main fishing well today.
"EAST BRANCH"
Little East Branch at Harvard is 1140cfs and 50 degrees. Fishs Eddy is 2320cfs and 59 degrees. Isos, Olives, Sulphers and Cahills have been scattered throughout. Beatle and Ant patterns also work well this time of year. Temps are okay, water levels are decent and the weather today with overcast skies this morning should be a good day to be out there.
"BEAVERKILL" BK is at 882cfs and 63 degrees! The Beaverkill has come way down and is probably fishable...Iso's, Beatles, and Ants all typically work well this time of year.
"WILLOWEMOC"
Same as BK, fishing and water are good.
DON'T FORGET TO MAKE YOUR FALL "STEELHEAD CAMP" RESERVATIONS
