Lake Wallenpaupack Hydroelectric Release

By law the USGS water flow gauge in Montague, NJ on the Delaware River must not drop below 1750 CFS. To maintain this minimum flow, water is released either from Lake Wallenpaupack or Cannonsville Reservoir. The issue occurs when large releases from Lake Wallenpaupack are used to maintain the minimum flow, while the Upper Delaware is in need of water to sustain the cold water fishery. Therefore, more water that is released from Lake Wallenpaupack, less water is released from Cannonsville. The link below will take you to the Lake Wallenpaupack Hydroelectric Station which has updated information on current discharge and scheduled boating releases. This information aids in predicting releases from Cannonsville.

BORDER WATER OUTFITTERS DAILY RIVER CONDITIONS AND FISHING REPORT

July 29, 2010  7:30 AM  by COZ

FISHING REPORT:

The Upper West Branch from Stilesville to Hale Eddy has been fishing the best throughout the entire sysytem for the last several weeks. Cold water temps are producing OK bugs the last few days. With today's overcast skies expect to see more olives and Iso's throughout and more surface action. The primary hatch are Sulphurs in the middle of the day around 2 and a mix of olives towards evenings. Isos have been productive blind casting in likely holding spots. Lots of tricos from Hale Eddy Bridge down to Junction Pool. the Gamelands and below being the best trico spots! Big East Branch water temperatures have been too low and warm to fish, Upper East from Coverd Bridge to Harvard has the coldest water. Trico's a scattering of Sulphurs and some small olives are the bugs of choice. Main Stem has fishable temps this morning and should produce some good tric's as from Junction to Stockport. Trico hatches early morning at Junction Pool have been good !! The best time to fish the Main Stem is early morning, water will warm into the 70s by mid day, too warm to fish the Main at that time.

ABOUT THE  UPPER DELAWARE SYSTEM:

The Rivers of the Upper Delaware and Beaverkill systems provide some of the best wild rainbow and brown trout fishing in the world. The Beaverkill and its largest tributary, the Willowemoc, flow through Roscoe, New York, the birthplace of American dry fly fishing. This anglers Mecca is just a few miles away. However, our main focus is the Upper Delaware River and its East and West branches of the Delaware river. These legendary tail waters flow cold most of the year due to bottom releases from Cannonsville and Pepacton reservoirs and it’s just a stones throw from BORDER WATER OUTFITTERS in Hancock, NY.  The Upper Delaware River system provides excellent fly fishing opportunities when other rivers in the East are unfishable due to high water temperatures. From April to October you can find wild Rainbows and Browns eager to take a dry due to the immense variety of hatches throughout the season. Nearly every eastern mayfly from size 8 green drakes to size 22 tricos reside in the river, making the Delaware one of the finest dry fly fisheries in the world. The Fish of the Delaware are wild browns and a unique species of acrobatic rainbows. These fish test both tippet strength and angler ability when hooked. Whether gently casting 40 feet to a bank sipper, aggressively stripping a streamer in the high waters of spring or nymphing through the perfect riffle, a hooked and landed Delaware River trout is a trophy of a lifetime.

RIVER INFO YOU SHOULD KNOW!!

The WEST BRANCH DELAWARE RIVER begins at Cannonsville reservoir a flows south some 17 miles to the town of Hancock, New York before joining the East Branch and forming the Main Branch or “BIG D”. The West Branch has the widest variety of structure, greatest number of islands and public access areas of all the three branches. The released water from Cannonsville reservoir creates this wonderful tail water and keeps the West Branch cooled most of the season making the West Branch a favorite among many anglers.

Season: April 1st to September 30th Cannonsville reservoir down to NY/PA border. Open year round catch & release only PA border down stream.

The MAIN BRANCH DELAWARE RIVER begins in Hancock, NY at the junction of the East and West branches known as "Junction Pool" or by local folks as "The Point". The Upper Main starts at "The Point" and continues about 12 miles to Lordville bridge. During summer months it is rare to have good cold water temperatures past Lordville. Most of the good summer fishing conditions are upstream of Buckingham boat launch. This portion of the Main has large islands, back channels, tree lined banks, wide deep pools, long riffles and lots of wader friendly water. Access is limited by foot. Using a water craft is the best way to access all the water.
The Lower Main starts at Lordville and continues some 20 miles to Callicoon, NY. the lower main fishes good for trout during Spring and fall seasons. During summer months the water temps are more conducive to great smallmouth bass action.

Season:  Regular season opens mid April and closes end of September.
Open year round for trout (Catch and release only)

Species: Brown, rainbow & brook trout. Smallmouth bass, walleye,
shad and some strippers. Rainbows average 14 inches, Browns about
17 but lots over 20 on dries.

The EAST BRANCH DELAWARE RIVER is broken into two sections, the Upper or Little East that begins at Pepacton Reservoir, Walton, Ny is the smallest of the branches and flows some 17 miles where it meets the Beaverkill (The Jaws) and forms the Big or Lower East Branch. From the Jaws the Big East widens and continues for 16 miles meeting the West Branch and forming Junction Pool at (The Point) in Hancock, NY.  The Upper East stays cold for most of the season with summer cold water release cooling into the mid 50's.
The Big East usually starts to warm in late June influenced greatly by the warm water of the Beaverkill. On wet years when reservoir is full temps could stay into the Mid 60's on the Big East due to larger cold water releases.

Season: April 1 to Oct 15th (Pepacton Dam to Hancock).  Oct 15th to Nov. 30th  Catch & Release only (Shinhopple Bridge downriver to Hancock).

Species: Browns, rainbows, brookies and smallmouth bass. Rainbows average 12", browns 16", lots of browns in the 20+ " class, some brookies, 10" average.
